Jim Crow Laws and Free-Markets

Most interesting thing I read today:

“Interestingly, by the 1870s the free market had already made some inroads towards ending segregation when streetcars were integrated. It was government, not business (which wanted profits from black ridership) that insisted on segregating streetcars and other public facilities.”

This if from “A Patriot’s History of the United States” by Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen.

The government is often rewarded with creating human rights but let’s not forget that the free-market has been the largest force in lifting people out of poverty and creating incentives for social changes.
