I stumbled over the American Sugar Alliance flyer on how they do not cost the American tax payer a dime. You can find that here.

They state:

"Sugar farmers don’t receive government subsidy checks under the U.S. sugar policy. They get all their income from the market."

As it is true that there is no subsidy for sugar, there is a huge tax on imported sugar. This statement that the sugar policy doesn’t cost the American tax payer a dime is false, because the American tax payer is also a consumer. Instead of giving them money directly, we pay more than market value for sugar.

The best part is at the end they brag:

"71% of the Senate and 60% of the House voted in favor of the current sugar program…"

I challenge all the "fiscal conservative republicans" and free trader Senators and Congressmen to vote against this next time.
