Free Trade Update

With all of this NAFTA talk I thought it was important to mention the current state of actual trade talks.

For those of you who do not know, we are currently in the "Doha trade rounds." This started in 2001 and has continued until now. The purpose is to create freer trade.

The Economist has done an interesting article in their yearly prediction magazine. To give you a brief overview the trade rounds have been frustrating. The problems have been agricultural subsidies in many developed countries. This is something we see quite often.

When we look at the United States and agreeing to trade deals, it is only going to get tougher. The period where the President was able to get a straight yes or no vote on trade agreements is over.

The Democrats recently haven’t been for free trade nor will allow President Bush to end his career on good trade deals. Since the economy is beginning to flutter and Europe is even feeling the effects, we may see a move towards protectionism.

There has been a lot done in favor of free trade and it will be very important in this next election to keep this in mind.

As I do not agree with many things that Senator John McCain has done, he is an avid free trader. If the Democrats keep up their ranting about protectionism, I might actually show up and vote for Sen. McCain.
