“College presidents from about 100 of the best-known U.S. universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.
The movement called the Amethyst Initiative began quietly recruiting presidents more than a year ago to provoke national debate about the U.S. drinking age, which is among the highest in the world.”
Finally, it is back up for debate. It even forgets to mention that you can be drafted to die for your country but you cannot have a beer. You can vote but you cannot drink. These are important rights that people should have. It reminds me of when I went to Italy and their drinking age is lower but their smoking age is higher. They had more of a smoking problem than a drinking problem. Many kids didn’t even like alcohol and if they did drink it was with the family. When I walked by a middle school the very first thing the kids would do is light up a cigarette. Sidenote: you can buy liqour from a grocery store and you have to buy cigarettes from a tobaccoist.
